HNC Engineering (Mechanical)

This programme results in a International qualification that is recognised by a number of professional Institutions such as The Institution of Mechanical Engineers.

It covers a broad range of fields from mechanical principles and engineering science, through to business management and thermodynamics - supported by practical activities in laboratories.

On successful completion, you will have developed the necessary skills required to work in industry at a senior level across a number of technical disciplines such as design and development, production and commissioning and testing.

How is the course assessed:

Whilst on this programme students will be assessed mainly using written assignments which are normally numerical in nature, where possible practical assessments will be encouraged (both individual and group based), along with project work complete with presentations (individual and group). All assessment methods are designed to incorporate key skills which are transferable to the workplace.

Learning and teaching methods

Methods of learning and teaching are designed to support students in becoming active members of a learning community. Students will be expected to work together in an informal environment as well as in formal classes where a culture of dignity, courtesy and mutual respect with staff and their peers is essential. A variety of methods will be used such as lectures, seminars and practical sessions.

Upon successful completion of this qualification, graduates will be equipped with the knowledge and skills to pursue a new career, or advance an existing one in the Engineering sector.

Engineering careers can begin with work opportunities with small to medium enterprise organisations (those with less than 250 employees) or with national and multi-national organisations. Many also go onto self employment which is usually not possible until a graduate has several years experience.

Other graduates will go on to work for large organisations which may comprise roles in engineering management; engineering maintenance and servicing, project management, design engineering, planning or working on large infrastructure projects linked to the engineering and construction industries.
